SC East Bengal win friendly against I-League champion Gokulam Kerala FC

SC East Bengal took advantage of goals from Balwant Singh and Wahengbam Angousana to win 2-1 against defending I-League champions Gokulam Kerala FC in a pre-season friendly here Wednesday. The Red and Gold Brigade started their preseason, playing two friendlies last week. Coached by former Real Madrid tactician Jose Manuel ‘Manolo’ Diaz, the Calcutta-based team beat Vasco SC and Salgaocar FC by 3-1 and 2-0 respectively.

Diaz gave goalkeeper Suvam Sen a start with the always reliable Tomislav Mrcela and Adil Khan playing as center-backs. Hira Mondal and Raju Gaikwad were the two full-backs while Sourav Das and Angousana pulled the strings in midfield. Naorem Mahesh and Bikash Jairu were deployed as wide midfielders in a 4-4-2 system which saw Antonio Perosevic and Balwant playing up front. After a few careful initial minutes, the Red and Gold Squad slowly began to warm up for the contest. Jairu was in the thick of the action as the Sikkimese winger swayed through some delightful turns.

After the third shot in a row, Balwant slipped past his marker to come home from close range, beating goalkeeper Gokulam Ajmal at his near post in the 40th minute. In the first half of added time, Angousana doubled down. Balwant found Perosevic in space with a nice air balloon. The Croatian striker brilliantly returned his marker and forced the keeper to make a low stop with the ball falling gently for Angousana who slipped as the ball squirmed.

Against the course of the game, Gokulam withdrew one. Dervisevic tried to cushion the ball to Suvam in the goal. But Gokulam’s Rahim Osumanu showed a good conscience to get in between and pass the keeper of the ball and nod at home. (ANI)
