LinkedIn is testing a new human-curated discovery stream

LinkedIn is testing a different version of a Discover feed — a new mobile app section with content curated by humans rather than algorithms.

Similar to other discovery-based feeds, a dedicated tab in the LinkedIn app will house content posted by accounts outside your network.

LinkedIn’s feed differs from others in the way content is curated.

Blake Barnes, VP of Product at LinkedIn, shared a preview of the new feed, saying it’s currently in an early testing period:

“…we are testing a dedicated space for you to discover relevant content and voices from people and organizations you are not connected with, that you might not otherwise see or hear. You can expect see trending voice conversations that match your professional interests, relevant news and events curated by our editorial team, and a wealth of other insights designed to help you advance in your career.

As the screenshot above shows, there’s more to LinkedIn’s discovery feed than just posts. In the top menu, you can browse videos, newsletters, events, and more.

Barnes actively answers questions on the discovery stream, one of which asks for more information about the content selection.

He says the content is curated by the LinkedIn News team and targeted to users based on their profession and interests:

“During initial testing, we will include content curated by our LinkedIn News team and relevant content based on an individual’s professional identity and possible interests. More to come here.

In addition to enriching the user experience with a greater variety of content, there is potential for audience growth that could lead to more professional opportunities.

There are, however, pros and cons to a human-curated stream.

For one thing, humans may be able to extract higher quality content than algorithms. On the other hand, they may only be drawing from a limited group of publishers who already have an established audience.

As it’s in the early days of testing, time will tell if smaller publishers get a boost from LinkedIn’s discovery stream.

For now, the stream is limited to English content. If you’re part of the test group, you’ll see a new “Discover” tab in the bottom navigation menu of the LinkedIn mobile app.
